Thanks to our generous BBQ sponsors, Alpine Bank and RHINEHART OIL, this year’s community BBQ will be free to all who attend. Come out and enjoy this long-standing tradition, before the Jr. Livestock Sale, which will include the traditional beef option, prepared the same way Chef Bobby Robinson Sr. did many years ago.
The Jr. Livestock Sale BBQ is a long-standing Routt County tradition, pre-dating the Fair by one year.
It was first held in October 1913 when the Town of Hayden hosted a wild game feast to greet the arrival of the Iron Horse. The Railroad Day barbecue - elk and bear meat - immediately became the largest annual gathering in Northwest Colorado. Between 1949 and 1989, when Hayden contractor and Chef Bobby Robinson Sr. presided over the grills, he insisted the “secret” to the incredible sauce was slew water and whiskey. Since 4-H clubs began hosting the event, the barbecue has an opportunity for youngsters to say thank you to purchasers at the Junior Livestock Sale.
